Loren -- aka "Dr. Deep"

Talent / instrument: -- Bass guitar, backing vocals

When did you start playing? -- Well, music has always been a part of my life. I was about four when my older brother started taking piano lessons, and mom always took me along for the ride. After awhile I wanted to play too, so I started lessons when I was six. After a couple of years of piano lessons I took up the cello. I picked up electric bass towards the end of high school and taught myself how to play. I majored in cello performance at the University of Minnesota, but all the while I continued to learn the bass and play all of those rock songs that couldn't be done on the cello.

Who were your early influences? -- At first, it was Bach, Brahms, & Beethoven on the cello, but it soon morphed into The Beatles, Boston, & Bad Company on the bass.

How old were you when you played your first gig? -- Since I missed out on being in a formal 'rock band' during my high school days, (we can blame that one on Beethoven) I didn't get to gig out on bass until I was around 20. The first real band was a blues band, and we used to play in the clubs around University Avenue. Interestingly, I joined a different blues band about a year later playing in clubs like the Artist's Quarter, The Union, Cabooze, Wilebski's, and Duffy's (later Norma Jean's). We managed to crack the "inner circle" and found ourselves opening for national blues artists like Luther Allison, Etta James, the Fabulous Thunderbirds and James Cotton when they would come through town. One time we even played a show where this new kid named Prince (yes, THAT Prince) opened for us. That was one helluva tough act to follow!

What are you currently listening to? -- Everything - the learning never stops. So much music ourt there...so little time!

What are your goals musically? -- I just want to have fun with my friends on stage and to be able to share our energy and musical passion with everyone who happens to come and catch our show on any given night.....the more, the merrier!
