Scott -- aka "Sandman"
Talent / instrument: -- Drums and concussion.
When did you start playing? -- When I figured out how to open the kitchen cabinet door so I could get to the pots and pans.
Who were your early influences? -- Thanks to my parents, I listened to early Motown and southern blues artists. Ranging from Smokey Robinson, Ray Charles, Curtis Mayfield, Dianna Ross to Muddy Waters and BB King. Plus all of the usual rock-n-roll suspects like The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Aerosmith.
How old were you when you played your first gig? -- I was 15 years old. My dad had to drive me and my drums to this club on the other side of town. I played a fill-in gig with a Country/Western band. My audition that afternoon consisted of me playing ‘Wipe Out’ with my hands on a counter top for the leader of the band at the local music store. I ended up staying in that band for over a year.
What are you currently listening to? -- ‘Johnny Winter’ – Johnny Winter’s first album, released in 1969. The benchmark for electric guitar blues. ‘Overnight Sensation – Apostrophe’ – Frank Zappa. Astonishing musicianship! ‘Magnification’ – Yes. The latest from the greatest.
What are your goals musically? To play good music with good friends. I’m not out to dominate the world, I just want to share with others the joy that music has brought to my life.
